Public Transport in Delhi

Introduction

Transport Services in Delhi Delhi is the capital of India. It is also a tourism city due to their historical significance. It draws many people every day for the varied reasons as traveling, business, politics, education and historical curiosity etc. Delhi has lots of places to see and monuments which are scattered in all over the city so a good transport very important to explore all the tourist attractions in easy way. The local transportation is the lifeline of the capital city of Delhi. More than half of the population in Delhi is dependent on local transport for commuting purposes. The means & modes of transport in New Delhi are many, ranging from the Metro Trains, Local Trains, Buses, Taxies and cabs.

Public Transport Service

Delhi is capital city of India where thousands of tourists and visitors from other states and other countries, arrives and travel within city. This count is increasing every year. City is mainly spread over an radius of 25kms from city center but population is increasing on regular basis. Due to huge public movement, city demands best public transportation system that will be able to cater the demand of increasing population. With the passage of time, Delhi government has taken many steps to meet public transport demand and efforts are consistently made to make it more convenient. At present, many public transport options are available for tourists and other visitors, to explore Delhi city, as per their purpose. Let's check some of the prominent & popular modes of transports, preferable used by visitors:

Bus

Delhi is well connected by bus and even though it is a cheap means of transport, buses can get very crowded, especially during peak hours. Most buses are government run and are operated by the DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) and are either red (air-conditioned) or green (non air-conditioned). Bus routes are not properly displayed at bus stops and the best way to find your way around is to check the route online or by asking people. Apart from DTC buses, Delhi citizens also uses privately hired buses. Such buses can easily be distinguished having different or no specific colour patters and mainly by daily commuters like office going people, hired by tourist group etc. Their movement is little bit fast as their have very few stoppages which are pre-fixed.

Taxi Cabs

There are various kinds of taxi services available in Delhi. The first being the yellow and black ambassadors, which usually charge 15% more than auto rickshaws. These taxis can be found at local taxi stands where you can book the cab and fix the fare. With the passage of time, their count is gradually decreasing as many private cab companies like OLA, Uber etc. have emerged and taken over large market share. They are using latest technology to reach their customer and thus their influence is higher than normal tourist cabs. Still presence of private tourist cabs can't be overlooked as they offers more tailormade traveling with many special facilities like they can be booked on full-day basis, covering places as per our convenience, alternations can easily be done during traveling etc. Radio taxi cabs are better for transfers on drop only basis, within city but if your usage is to retain cab for full-day or multiple days in out-station tours, then private tourist cabs are most useful for us.

Delhi Metro Rail

The Delhi Metro remains one of the fastest, most economic and best ways to travel around Delhi in air conditioned comfort. This expansive intra city rail network connects Old Delhi to Central Delhi to NCR. The metro has been divided into six lines, namely the red line, yellow line, blue line, green line, violet line and the airport line. Fares start at Rs. 8 and go up to Rs. 30. Buy a smart card, if you're going to be staying in Delhi for longer. A smart card offers you a 10% discount on fares and also saves you the trouble of having to stand in line to buy a token. There is also a tourist card which offers unlimited use for Rs.100 for one day and Rs.250 for three days. The first compartment of all metro trains is reserved for lady passengers, ensuring a safe and comfortable ride. Fare of metro rail is little bit higher than DTC buses but at the same time it is more convenient for point to point traveling as their is no traffic-jam problem with it and offers traveling in air-conditioned mode. Its movement is comparatively fast then DTC buses.

Hop on Hop Bus Service

These buses, also known as Ho Ho Buses are air conditioned tourist buses which follow a set route of stops around the city, giving passengers the flexibility to hop off and hop on the next bus as and when they like. Operated by Delhi Tourism, the Ho Ho buses are manned by English speaking staff and the service is available on all days of the week, except Mondays. Passengers can opt for either a one day or two day pass. The Ho Ho Buses take tourists to more than 20 tourist attractions in Delhi, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, markets, monuments and bazaars. The Ho Ho buses are by far one of the most convenient and relaxed ways to explore Delhi.

Auto Rickshaws

Cheaper than taxis, auto rickshaws are a quick and cheap alternative to get around the city. In Delhi we will find CNG auto-rickshaws which can easily be distinguished by their yellow-green color combination. They run on gas thus their travel cost is less and also causes low pollution. Though in some cases auto drivers may refuse to ply by the meter and also tend to overcharge. There are also numerous pre-paid auto stands run by the Delhi Traffic Police in railway-stations, bus-stands. All you need to do is tell them your destination, pay them upfront and retain the receipt given to you, which you will need to give the driver when you reach your destination. Here it is important to note that when pre-paid booths are not available, then also we can directly hire them as per meter or fixed the total amount in advance and pay at the end of journey. While dealing with them, their is always scope for bargaining as they normally quotes more than actual fare.

Cycle Rickshaws

Its usage is decreasing day by day with introduction of battery-run small & compact e-rickshaws. These rickshaws are like boom for traversing through narrow lanes where car can't enter. Cycle rickshaws are ideal for destinations which are too long to walk, yet too short for an auto rickshaw or a taxi. Since cycle rickshaws do not have meters, it is advised to decide a fare before hopping in. Old Delhi and other smaller parts of Delhi, which are notorious for their narrow lanes, are best explored in the back of a cycle rickshaw. In New Delhi area, we will not find any cycle-rickshaw as per restriction imposed by Traffic department. Their slow movement often becomes reason for traffic jams thus they can be find in old Delhi and congested areas. While visiting Chandni Chowk, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Old Delhi Spice markets like Chawri Bazar, Nai Sarak, Parathe Wali Gali, Dariban Kala, Old Delhi railway station, Khari Baoli etc, it is very reliable mode of transport.

Walking

Delhi is a great city to enjoy leisurely walks; especially down the leafy street of Lutyen's Delhi, Central Delhi, Old Delhi and some parts of South Delhi. Some great areas to go walking in Delhi are from India Gate to Rajpath in Central Delhi, Jama Masjid to Red Fort in Old Delhi and the Hauz Khas Complex, where you'll find a lake and ancient monuments. Walking is often considered as the best way to explore congested parts of Delhi like Old Delhi, Paharganj ares. It allows us flexibility to move anywhere as per own convenience and visitors can observe the surrounding areas in better way. Understanding of walking visitor is always better then fast moving cab visitors as they have more time to notice and observe surrounding things. At the same time, it is time consuming process also so use it in selective way.
