Qutub Minar is one of the most popular monuments in Delhi which is a declared UNESCO World Heritage site. It is best suitable place to visit in Delhi, which is close form Delhi Airport. As we all know that Qutub Minar is located inside a complex popularly called Qutub Minar Complex in which, apart from Qutub Minar, we can find variety of other heritage monuments. Their are variety of places to visit in Qutub minar complex in which Iron pillar is a popular attraction which is seen with curiosity. Here we have discussed about Iron pillar in Qutub minar complex. Pillar is located inside the complex, close to Quwwat-ul Mosque. It is made up of wrought iron which made had made it long lasting pillar as it is rust fee. Height of Iron pillar is 24 ft and its weight is more than 6 tons. It contains 98% wrought iron content. It is thought that the Iron Pillar of Qutub minar was crafted using forge welding. The pillar is ornate, but hardly awe-inspiring, unless one knows just how long and mysterious the history of it is.

Iron Pillar

The Iron Pillar that stands at the center of the Quwwatul Mosque dates back to 4th Century A.D. It is counted in one of Delhi's most curious and mysterious structures. Erected in honor of the Hindu God, Lord Vishnu, it has inscriptions of 'Brahmi characters' on it to indicate the same. Some people also say that it was made in the memory of the Gupta King Chandragupta II (375-413). in front of a Vishnu Temple complex at Udaygiri around 402 AD, and later shifted by Anangpal in 10th century CE from Udaygiri to its present location. Anangpal built a Vishnu Temple here and wanted this pillar to be a part of that temple. There are many archaeologists, historians and scientists who have been studying it for so many centuries now. But the mystery remains unsolved. The pillar is 7.3 metres tall and is one metre below the ground with a diameter of 48 centimetres at the foot, tapering to 29 cm at the top. It has a weight of approximately 6.5 tonnes and it was manufactured by 'forged welding'. The estimated weight of the decorative bell of the pillar is 646 kg while the main body weighs 5,865 kg, thus making the entire pillar weigh 6,511 kg

Mystery Behind It

It was erected by Gupta dynasty that ruled northern India in AD 320-540. According to the ancient records, this pillar was present in Madhya Pradesh (Central India) before it moved to Delhi. But by whom and when it brings to Delhi is still remains a mystery. Along with this, the Iron Pillar has not rusted in all these years leaving everyone bewildered. The pillar thus, highlights ancient India's achievements in metallurgy. The pillar is made of 98 per cent wrought iron and has stood 1,600 years without rusting or decomposing. But it raises more questions than it answers. What was the reason for its construction? What is the true meaning of long inscription in Brahmi characters engraved upon it? What exact processes were followed in making it? And most importantly, how is it non-rusting? According to a popular belief, it is considered good luck if one could stand with one's back to the pillar and make one's hands meet behind it.
